As you set the pace for your hectic training schedule and prepare for your next competition or race, there’s one thing that can put you off competing, or force you into taking a break, when you really cannot afford to: muscle cramps. Muscle cramps are debilitating, sometimes terrifying, and can overwhelm you – and they’re sometimes caused by a build-up of lactic acid.
Oxygen Is Essential For Exercise
As you begin your exercise routine, or set off on your run, your body generates energy by using oxygen. In this aerobic state, you’re able to keep up with the demands of your day’s exercise, as your muscles are fed oxygen and work to sustain your body `through your rigorous training program. But, once you exceed your capabilities, your body flips over to an anaerobic state, where your muscles are not receiving enough oxygen to continue. At this point, your body begins to break down glucose, to provide your muscles with the energy they need for you to finish your race or complete the circuit. During that time, however, lactic acid builds up in the background.
How Lactic Acid Builds Up
As you continue in your training or competition, your muscles burn more energy and produce lactic acid. Very quickly, this breaks down into lactate, which then leads to the release of hydrogen ions. When your body can’t process the lactate quickly enough to turn it into energy for your muscles, the hydrogen ions begin to build up and increases the levels of acidity within your muscles and tissues. Just as you think you’re starting to get ahead, you may be defeated by a sudden bout of nausea, extreme muscle cramps, a burning sensation in your muscles, or terrible stomach pain. That’s when you’ll need to stop, or bow out.
Your Lactic Threshold
While counteracting the effects of lactic acid build-up is important, seeing lactate as an enemy is incorrect. Instead, preparing yourself to achieve the athletic feats you set out to should include a way to manage your lactic acid build-up, and increase your lactic threshold – that’s when lactic acid begins to build up.
